Made from colored epoxy resin, live edge river tables are a custom furniture innovation new to the Cleveland area- and one that we are excited to deliver straight to your home! River tables are made by placing the desired live edge slabs within the bounds of a rectangular mold. Then, colored epoxy resin is carefully poured to fill the gaps between live edge pieces and/or cracks. The possibilities concerning colors, opacities, and other decorations such as quartz crystal or gold flakes are limited only the imagination of the designer. How We Make Your Live Edge Furniture:

1) Choosing Your Ideal Live Edge Slab of Wood

To start, we work hand-in-hand with you to select a perfect slab of wood that has beautiful edges and, in some cases, features the bark as well. When choosing, elements to consider are the size of the slab, the type of wood, its shape, color and naturally occurring aesthetic features such as grain patterns. You are always more than welcome to visit our studio to pick out your favorite piece of live edge slab wood in stock or we can email you pictures of our complete inventory.

2) Designing Your Unique Piece of Live Edge Furniture

Once the wood has been chosen, our skilled craftspeople will work with you to create several design options, draw up rough sketches from which you will choose your favorite, and finally create the finished rendering for your approval.

3) Pricing and Deposit for Your Live Edge Furniture

When the final design has been approved, we agree on a price and receive a deposit. Then we get started! Because we custom design free form live edge furniture, no two pieces are exactly the same. Our prices start at less than $1,000.00 for small tables and range from $2,000.00 to $6,000.00 for larger pieces of live edge furniture.

4) Making Your Live Edge Furniture in Our Workshop

Now we get started on the manufacture of your one-of-a-kind live edge piece of furniture at our Chagrin Falls workshop. During the process, our carpenters focus on incorporating the natural state of the wood slab into the design of the live edge furniture so that the grains, knots and burrs are showcased. How we treat and reinforce the natural holes, cracks and grain patterns in the wood depends on your specifications. Some of our clients ask us to leave the imperfections and voids in the wood, while others have us sand, fill in and finish indentations with resins, epoxies, polyurethane coatings and wax.

Because bark will deteriorate over time, we usually use special carpentry tools to dislodge the bark from the original slab and expose the live edge. However, if you request that we leave the bark intact, we know how to protect it from insects and other elements that will weaken and damage the bark.

Next, we sand the wood. We normally apply numerous clear even coats of protective finishes. One of the reasons that the current design trend of using live-edge slabs of wood is so popular is because the outline of the tree is shown and the natural colors of the wood and the grain patterns are left intact and accentuated. We also use wooden bow tie inlays to reinforce cracks in wood planks because they look great while preserving the natural appearance of the wood.

Our designers and craftspeople will work with you to design the perfect stand for the finished live edge wood slab. Whether it’s for a table, credenza, desk, or other piece of furniture, we use wood, glass, and metal to create the perfect look, balance, and design for you.

You are always welcome to visit our workshop to see the progress of your live edge furniture piece. You can even participate in building it if you are willing to get a little sawdust on your hands!

5) Delivering Your Live Edge Piece of Furniture

After we finish the production of your live edge furniture piece, we deliver it to your home or office and then perform any assembly that is required. Congratulations! Where Our Live Edge Wood Comes From

Some of our inventory of wood that sports a natural or “live” edge is stored and dried by one of our exclusive Canton, Ohio vendors.

We also purchase PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified American hardwoods, salvaged wood, reclaimed wood, live edge wood slabs and live edge lumber from Ohio Woodlands Lumber. The company is located in Salineville, OH about 75 miles southeast of our live edge furniture manufacturing workshop in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Much of the figured cherry, sugar maple, walnut, red oak lumber and slabs we use to design live edge furniture is provided by Ohio Woodlands. We also buy some of our live edge conference and dining table top slabs from this company.

The Coldwell family manages Ohio Woodlands Lumber and operates the Coldwell Family Tree Farm which is part of the ATFS, the American Tree Farm System. The tree farm was named “Ohio’s 2014 Tree Farm of the Year”. In some cases, we source our live edge slabs from local lumber sawmills or Amish craftsman in Northeastern Ohio.
