Furnishings from A Christmas Story’s Bumpus House Returned to 1940’s Glory by Chagrin Valley Custom Furniture
CLEVELAND, OH – November 15, 2018 – “It was as if someone had emptied a Red Ryder BB Gun on the furniture at the Bumpus House,” quipped Sheldon Myeroff, owner of Chagrin Valley Custom Furniture (CVCF) in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Myeroff was referring to the vintage furnishings that were purchased for the “A Christmas Story” movie home of the Parker family’s next-door neighbors, and Ralphie Parker’s desire for that particular gun for Christmas.A Christmas Story is an iconic movie from 1983, filmed in Cleveland, that has become a holiday classic. His home and the Christmas Story House Museum across the street in the city’s old Tremont district have become popular tourist attractions since the properties were bought by Brian Jones in 2004.
The Parker’s home, open to both tours and overnight stays, became so popular, in 2016 owner Brian Jones decided to buy the Bumpus’ house next door for overnight stays as well. Chagrin Valley Custom Furniture was chosen to take on the formidable task of restoring, repairing, and recreating the 1940’s-style furniture for the house.“Some of the furniture was broken, mangled, and distressed”, said Myeroff. “Some had scrapes, scratches, bumps and grinds and the stain and paint had come off.” It took three months of cleaning, sanding, repairing, refinishing and painting for Myeroff and his furniture woodworking team to bring the pieces back to their original glory.
While CVCF keeps busy with furniture repair, restoration and refinishing, most of their business comes from homeowners who want a truly unique piece of furniture for their home that they can’t find or can’t buy anywhere else. Myeroff sits down with customers and together they design the piece. CVCF specializes in custom rustic barn doors, live edge and rustic dining tables, coffee tables, and side tables, live edge countertops and bartops, credenzas, bookcases, vanities, and all kinds of woodworking projects that you can see in the gallery.
Myeroff founded Chagrin Valley Custom Furniture in 2014 and worked out of his Chagrin Falls home until the small shop got too busy. In early 2018, he moved into his current woodworking facility in Warrensville Heights, where he also has a showroom and store. Located at 26309 Miles Road (Suite 4), the public is welcome to visit the facility weekdays or on weekends by appointment.
“We loved the project,” says Myeroff, founder and CFM (Chief Furniture Maker) of Chagrin Valley Custom Furniture. “We already were fans of the movie because of the Cleveland connection and we were honored to participate in making it a real trip back in time for visitors.”
